Updates and Reminders for week 5

Unit 1 is complete and I hope you are off to a good start in completing Unit 2.  Listed below is some iformation about the completed Unit 1 exam and some updates and reminders for the next week of class.

Unit 1 Exam

I have returned a graded copy (as a pdf file) to each of you via email to both your LCC student email address and by D2L email.  I know some of you prefer to use a personal email address or a non-LCC address (an MSU email address, for example).  Please know that LCC prohibits me from sending grade info to a non-LCC email address, so you’ll need to look for your returned exam at either your LCC student email address or D2L mail.

The exam average was 64 and the high score was 100.  I would be happy to answer any questions you have about how to do any of the questions you struggled on or about the grading – just contact me and we can do so.

Extra credit opportunity associated with returned exam 1

In order to encourage and incentivize students to take advantage of the help and tutoring opportunities available at LCC, the following bonus point opportunity is available for exam 1 only:

    • You can earn 5 bonus points by going over each incorrect question in your Unit 1 exam with either one of the Learning Commons Chemistry Tutors or with your instructor.  The deadline for doing this is September 30, 2024.

      • Complete the session with one of the tutors (either in person or remotely): Learning Commons Chemistry Tutoring Schedule
      • Give the tutor your name and instructor name (Bruce Farris)
      • Complete by Sept 30.
      • On Oct 1, the tutors will let me know you completed the assignment and I will credit you.

Additional Study Resources

Don’t forget to look at the Unit 1 – additional study resourcespage on this Website.  It contains many resources to help you prepare for the exam.  Please take a look at them.  One of those resources is a practice exam.  Please read more about the practice exam below:

Practice Exam
What the practice exam is:

This practice exam will be similar in length, number of questions, types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, numerical problems, etc) to your exam.  The practice exam will be useful as a general review and will help you see how prepared you are.  If the practice exam (without looking at your notes) is easy for you, the actual exam probably will be.  If it is difficult, the actual exam probably will be.

What the practice exam is NOT:

The actual exam will NOT be the same as the practice exam with only a few numbers changed.  Do NOT think that if you only study and memorize the questions on the practice exam that you will be ready for the exam because the questions will be the same.

Updates and Reminders for week 3 (including Unit 1 exam)

I hope you had a good weekend and your study of the Unit 1 topics is going well!  Here are some brief updates and reminders for the third week of class:

week 3:

  • Study the third topic:  Stoichiometry
  • Online Homework: Stoichiometry due
  • Complete Quiz 3 on D2L due
  • Finish all Unit 1 Online Homework (Essential Ideas, Atoms, Molecules and Ions, and Stoichiometry) due
  • Unit 1 Exam (paper and pencil, proctored at testing center). Available due — more on the Unit exam is below
  • Finish Unit 1 Honors option if pursuing due

Again, more info about the Unit 1 exam is listed directly below.  Have a good week and please contact me with any questions or concerns related to the class!

Updates and Reminders for week 2

I hope you had a good Labor Day weekend!  Here are some brief updates and reminders for the second week of class:

week 2:

Grades so far

At this point, I have read your introductory surveys that you submitted and returned them to the email address you sent them from with any comments.  Thanks for sending them in!  nYou received 10 points for completing the survey and submitting it.

Also, your grade for Quiz 1 (taken on D2L) should be in the D2L grade book.  Since the lowest three quiz grades will be dropped and the D2L gradebook is already set up to do that, it will say at this time that the quiz is dropped — please don’t worry about that.  The gradebook is working correctly and will keep your highest nine quiz grades at the end of the semester.

Finally, I received several questions about the quiz on Questions 9 and 11:

  • For Question 9, please note that for numbers between 0 and 1, it is considered incorrect form to start with a decimal point (for example 0.5 is correct, .5 is incorrect).   As we often use numbers like .5 in everyday life, I did not penalize you for that, rather I credited everyone an extra 0.5 points to make up for that question.
  • For Question 11 (convert 400. K to degrees F), many of you did the calculation correctly and entered 260.33.  However, since 400.K has three significant figures, following the significant figure rules the answer should have three as well.  Therefore, 260. was correct (261 was also accepted).  There was an errot in the quiz and 260. was initially considered incorrect, but if you answered that I’ve fixed it and credited you for that.

Please let me know if you have any questions about accessing material or assignments, the course as a whole or how the course works, or about the course material.  Have a good week!

Updates and Reminders for week 1

I hope you are off to a good start in this course and any additional courses you are taking this semester!  Here are some brief updates and reminders for the first week of class:

Many of you have already turned in your Class Participation Assignment/Intro Quiz.I will be reading them, answering questions, and returning them to you by email over the next few days.  I will credit your work in the gradebook as I return them.

Please let me know if you have any questions about accessing material or assignments, the course as a whole or how the course works, or about the course material.  Have a good weekend and first week!
