Additional Study Resources

Don’t forget to look at the Unit 4 – additional study resources page on this Website.  It contains many resources to help you prepare for the exam.  Please take a look at them.  One of those resources is a practice exam.  Please read more about the practice exam below:

Practice Exam
What the practice exam is:

This practice exam will be similar in length, number of questions, types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, numerical problems, etc) to your exam.  The practice exam will be useful as a general review and will help you see how prepared you are.  If the practice exam (without looking at your notes) is easy for you, the actual exam probably will be.  If it is difficult, the actual exam probably will be.

What the practice exam is NOT:

The actual exam will NOT be the same as the practice exam with only a few numbers changed.  Do NOT think that if you only study and memorize the questions on the practice exam that you will be ready for the exam because the questions will be the same.

Updates and reminders for week of March 18

Hi CHEM 151 online students,

I hope you had good spring break, that your return last week went well and that your progress on Unit 3 is going well. Some updates and announcements for the week are listed below.

Unit 2 Recap

The Unit 2 exams have all been graded and returned to you.  Please let me know if you have questions about how to do any of the problems or the grading and I will be glad to discuss it with you.  Unit 2 is the post mathematical of the units and had the most emphasis on problem solving — and on average is the most difficult for the most students.  You will find that Unit 3 is much more conceptual, with Units 4 and 5 to be somewhere between Units 2 and 3.

Unit 3

I hope your study of Electronic Structure of Atoms & Periodic Properties of Elements has been going well – next up is Basic Concepts of Chemical Bonding & Molecular Geometry and Bonding Theory.  There are some issues with the images in the Bruce’s Notes – Basic Concepts of Chemical Bonding & Molecular Geometry and Bonding Theory page — they are due to some updates in the OpenStax website.  I am aware of the issues and I am working this week to fix them and restore the images as soon as I can.  If you have begun reading it and noticed the image issues, please check back later in the week.  I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

Unit 3 due dates are as follows:

Have a great week and please let me know should you have questions!

Spring Break

LCC is on Spring Break the coming week. Since this is an asynchronous online course, I realize you might wish to operate on the schedule that best works for you.  Therefore, Unit 3 (the next Unit) is available now.

Extra time is built into Unit 3 for Spring Break, so even though the material is available should you choose to study it there is no expectation for you to do so — and if you choose to not work over Spring Break at all you will still have the normal amount of days allocated for that material.

I will be grading the Unit 2 exams later in the week and will post results in the gradebook later in the week and return them to you via email after grading them.

Have a great Spring Break and I will post the next announcement by the end of next weekend!

Online CHEM 151 reminders for week of Feb 26 (including Unit 2 exam)

Hi online CHEM 151 students!   This is a final reminder to complete your Unit 2 work if you haven’t already – the due dates are:

  • Unit 2 Online Homework assignments:  due Mon Feb 26
  • Quiz/Class Participation 7 Due Mon Feb 26
  • Unit 2 Exam must be completed during testing center hours by the closing time on Tuesday Feb 27.  See more details about the exam below.

Additionally, after completing the Unit 2 exam you should begin work on Unit 3. Unit 3 is quite different from Units 1 and 2 ( This link has an overview) .  All deadlines for Unit 3 can be found on the course schedule. Extra time is built into Unit 3 for Spring Break, so even though the material is available should you choose to study it there is no expectation for you to do so — and if you choose to not work over Spring Break at all you will still have the normal amount of days allocated for that material.

The online homework for Unit 3 is available now and the next Quiz / Class Participation exercise will be due March 18.

Best wishes for a good wrap up of Unit 2 and Spring Break, and please contact me if you have questions or need assistance.

Online CHEM 151 reminders for week of Feb 19

Hi online CHEM 151 students!

I’m sorry that LCC’s internet issues have affected access to your ability to access the course website.  Reports I’m hearing is that is current still affecting some people, although I’m currently able to access it from off campus.

Yesterday, I sent out an email containing attachments or links (outside the course website) link to:

  • the Online Course Schedule.
  • Bruce’s notes on this past week’s topic (Gases) and next week’s topic (Thermochemistry)
  • Quiz 6 (on gases – due Monday 2/19)
  • Quiz 7 (on Thermichemistry – due Monday 2/26)
  • other study resources

Hopefully those resources will help you keep pace if you are still unable to access the course website.  Please keep me informed.

The online homework for all three Unit 2 topics is all due Monday 2/26 — that is still some time off so hopefully the internet issue will be resolved for everyone in plenty of time to complete that — please contact me if it becomes an issue.

The Unit 2 exam window is Feb 23-27.  It will be given in the same way as the Unit 1 exam. More info is below.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need help with the course material.

Online CHEM 151 reminders for week of Feb 12

Hi online CHEM 151 students!

At this point, hopefully you are well into Unit 2. To be “on pace” you should have completed your study of Solutions and Chemical Reactions and be underway on Gases.

The following is a list of updates and reminders for the coming week:

Quiz/Class Participation 6 and 7

Quiz/Class Participation Assignment 6 is available now and is due by Monday Feb 19 at 11:59 pm (also listed on the Course Schedule).  If you need a little extra time as the quiz was made available late, just let me know and I’ll work with you.

Quiz/Class Participation Assignment 7 will be due by Monday Feb 26 at 11:59 pm (also listed on the Course Schedule).

Other upcoming Unit 2 deadlines

Have a great week and please contact me with any questions or concerns!

Online CHEM 151 reminders for week of Feb 5

Hi online CHEM 151 students!   Unit 1 is complete and hopefully you have gotten a good start on Unit 2.  The following is a list of updates and reminders for the coming week.

Unit 1 Exam returned

Your graded unit 1 exams have all been returned to you via email (to both D2L email and LCC Student email) as pdf attachments.  The exam average was 62.7.  Please take a look at the exam and check the grading and total score.  I would be happy to talk to any of you via email, phone or WebEx about any specific exam questions or general concerns/questions after taking the exam – please contact me should you wish and I’m glad to try to help!

Quiz/Class Participation 4

After grading and returning Unit 1 exams for this class and my in-person class, I’m currently grading Quiz/participation 4 and returning them as I grade them.  If you haven’t received it yet, look for it soon via email.

Unit 2

The next unit is Unit 2 and it will move more into the study of chemistry, as opposed to the calculational tools emphasized in Unit 1 (especially in the Matter and measurement section).  An overview of Unit 2 is provided at this link: Unit 2.  On average, most students consider Unit 2 to be the most challenging unit in the class.  Therefore, if Unit 1 was relatively easy for you, keep up the good work for Unit 2 (you will likely fing it to be more challenging).  If you found Unit 1 to be difficult, please follow up with me or the Learning Commons tutors — Unit 2 builds on Unit 1 and if you get behind it can be difficult to catch up.

The organization of Unit 2 is similar to Unit 1 – the assignments and deadlines for Unit 2 can be seen on the Online Course Schedule – the next deadline (and the first for this Unit) is Feb 12.

Quiz/Class Participation 5

Quiz/Class Participation Assignment 5 is available and due Monday, Feb 12.

Other upcoming Unit 2 deadlines

Online CHEM 151 reminders for week of Jan 29 – including Unit 1 exam

Hi online CHEM 151 students!   I hope your wrap up of Unit 1 is going well, as well as your final prep for the Unit 1 exam (if you haven’t taken it already).  The following is a list of reminders for the coming week as you wrap up Unit 1 and begin Unit 2.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the information below or about the course material.

Unit 1 Exam

If you haven’t already taken the Unit 1 exam, please see the info at the end of this page under Unit 1 Exam.  The final day to take the Unit 1 exam is Tuesday, Jan 30, 2024.

Unit 2

The next unit is Unit 2 and it will move more into the study of chemistry, as opposed to the calculational tools emphasized in Unit 1 (especially in the Matter and measurement section).  An overview of Unit 2 is provided at this link: Unit 2.

The organization of Unit 2 is similar to Unit 1 – the assignments and deadlines for Unit 2 can be seen on the Online Course Schedule – the next deadline (and the first for this Unit) is Feb 12.

Online Homework

The online homework for all three assignments in Unit 1 is due today – Monday Jan 29.

For those of you doing the honor’s homework (or interested in it), I can offer some flexibility on the deadlines – please contact me if you have interest in or questions about the Honors option.

Quiz/Class Participations

Quiz 3’s are being graded and will be returned to you shortly (if they haven’t already).  There was an error in question 3.  It said “How many oxygen atoms are in 1500 atoms of C6H12O6.”  It should have said “How many oxygen atoms are in 1500 molecules of C6H12O6.”  Because of this error, you got full credit regardless of your answer.

The correct answer to the question as it should have been written is:

1500 molecules * 6 O atoms/molecule = 9000 O atoms.
