Practice Exam
What the practice exam is:

This practice exam will be similar in length, number of questions, types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, numerical problems, etc) to your exam.  The practice exam will be useful as a general review and will help you see

how prepared you are.  If the practice exam (without looking at your notes) is easy for you, the actual exam probably will be.  If it is difficult, the actual exam probably will be.

What the practice exam is NOT:

The actual exam will NOT be the same as the practice exam with only a few numbers changed.  Do NOT think that if you only study and memorize the questions on the practice exam that you will be ready for the exam because the questions will be the same.

Online CHEM 151 Update March 25 (includes Unit 3 exam and schedule update)

I hope all of you have been able to get back into the swing of things with all things LCC after the cyberthreat outage.  If you are having any issues accessing materials, changing passwords, etc please see the info below.  This update contains information regarding deadline extensions and schedule changes as a result of the outage as well as unit 3 exam information.

If you are unable to change your LCC Password to access D2L and LCC email, read this.  This does NOT apply to the online homework.

If you are unable to access D2L or LCC email, or change your LCC Password, please contact the LCC Help Desk at 517-483-5221.

If you are unable to log into the ONLINE HOMEWORK, read this

When you changed your LCC Password after the cyberthreat, it DID NOT change your password for the online homework.  You should still use your same password that you used before the cyberthreat outage (or you can use lost password to reset it – remember the recovery email will go to your LCC email address – not D2L email)

Course Schedule and Deadline changes

All deadline extensions and schedule changes as a result of the cyberthreat outage are posted in the Online Course Schedule.  These deadlines have been extended as follows:

  • All unit 3 deadlines (Electronic Structure and Periodic Properties Online Homework, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Geometry Online Homework, Quiz/Class participation 8, Quiz/Class Participation 9, and the Unit 3 Exam have had the deadlines extended by 7 days.

All assignments will be available on the dates they were originally scheduled.  This will enable you to stay on the original schedule if you were relatively unaffected by the outage or to catch up gradually and still complete the course by the end of the semester if it affected you more substantially.  If these extensions are not sufficient or pose undue hardship, please contact me and we will make other arrangements.

Online CHEM 151 Update weekend of March 18-19

LCC sent out information on Twitter last night reporting on the status of courses and closures as a result of the cyberthreat.  If you haven’t already read it, see the link here: Update on Twitter

Key points from the update:

  • If you have any in-person classes, they resume Tuesday March 21.
  • Online courses are paused until further notice (since D2L and LCC email are not operational.  However, if you wish, you can continue some work in this course during the outage.  For what you can do and deadline information, see below:
Reading course material on this website and in the OpenStax website

Everything on this site and the optional OpenStax text are not affected by the outage

Online Homework Assignments

The online homework system is still operable.  As you know, it is new and in some of the sections (including the unit 3 assignments).  I have uploaded some problems to the electronic structure and periodic properties assignment and will continue throughout the weekend and into next week on it and later assignments.  If you wish, you are free to work on the online homework now and as I upload other problems.  However, the deadline for the online homework for both assignments Unit 3 will be extended to well after online classes at LCC resume.

Quiz/Class Participation

Quiz/Class Participation Assignment 8 is available for you to work on now, and I will post Quiz/class participation 9 this week.  I will continue to post the rest (10-13) periodically.  New due dates for all of them will be posted on the course schedule after online classes resume at LCC.  However, if you want to want to work on them during the outage, you are free to do so.  If you do, you will just need to hold on to your completed assignments, as you will not be able to submit them to me until LCC email resumes (unless you happen to be on campus, where you could give me a paper copy).  You can submit them to me by email once email is restored and classes resume.

Exams

New exam windows will be posted on the Online Course Schedule once classes resume

Grades and Grading

Until D2L access is restored, neither you or I will have access to your grades.  Also, I will not be able to grade any assignments until email is restored.  Hopefully, that will be soon!

Help

If you live in the Lansing area and can come to campus, the Learning Commons will be providing in-person tutoring and I will be available to meet on campus as well (either during office hours MW 12:30 – 1:30 or other times by appointment).  I can be reached by call or text at 517-618-1716 (but not by email) until the outage ends.  If you have any questions, please contact me at that number as well.

Thursday 3/16 update

Most of you have seen the College’s messages that online classes are cancelled at least through the weekend due to a cyberthreat.  The college email servers are down, so you will not be able to email quizzes to me or contact me via email.

If it is helpful to you and best fits your needs, feel free to access info on this website that you can access, but you are under no obligation to do so during the online course cancellation period.  The Online Course Schedule and deadlines will be updated to give you time to complete assignments once online classes resume.

If you have questions or need to contact me, please text 517-618-1716 and include your name and which class you are taking.

I’m sorry about the impact this is having on your studies and hope to be able to fully resume class soon.

Unit 3 is next

Unit 3 comes next.   See the Online Course Schedulefor assignments and deadlines for Unit 3. As you will see, I’ve put extra time into the topics in Unit 3’s suggested pacing for the course to allow you to step away from the course during spring break.  That said, the resources are there should you work on it over this time, since this is an online class and I realize many of you have different schedules, plans, obligations, etc.

The homework for Unit 3 is still being checked and finalized.  I anticipate completing the next online homework assignment over spring break.  The red banner saying that is is under construction will be removed when it is available.  It is not due until 3/20 (10 days after the end of Spring Break) – so you will have plenty of time to complete it after Spring Break.  The study resources on OpenStax, the Brown and LeMay, and Bruce’s Notes for Unit 3 are all available now.

Spring Break

Spring Break is the week of March 6-10.  I will be traveling some and working (including grading your Unit 2 Exams) some during that time.  I will check email occasionally but not daily over break, so if I’m slower than usual responding please know that I did receive your message and will return it.

Best wishes for a good spring break and please let me know should you have questions.
