Exam 5 and Final Exam reminders and info

Unit 5 Exam

The exam is a proctored, pen/pencil and paper exam.  It is not offered online on D2L. The exam will be taken  in the testing center of your choice (like Exams 1-4). The window is 11/17-11/21 (excluding Sunday when the Testing Centers are closed), so you can take it during Testing Center open hours on

  • Thurs 12/1
  • Fri 12/2
  • Sat 12/3
  • Mon 12/5

For this exam, you will be provided a copy of the Periodic Table for Units 4-5 You can see the Table in the Unit 5 Folder under content in D2L or at this link.

Final Exam

The final exam will also be a pencil and paper exam in the Testing Center.  The exam will be available Thursday 12/8 – Saturday 12/10 (note no Monday availability).

The exam is a proctored, pen/pencil and paper exam.  It is not offered online on D2L. The exam will be taken  in the testing center of your choice (like the five unit exams).

The exam is comprehensive, covering the entire course.  It will be very similar to the unit exams (a mix of multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and problems),  It is different in the unit exams in a few ways:

  1. It is longer.  You will have one hour and 40 minutes (100 minutes) to complete the final exam
  2. The problem questions will be worth 10 points rather than the typical 8 points on the unit exam
  3. You are allowed to take a 3″x 5″ index card  for use on the Final Exam.  You can write anything you wish on the card to use as notes.  It must be handwritten (not typed on computer) but you can use both sides.
  4. You will be provided the same resources you got on all the unit exams throughout the course:
    • The units 1-3 periodic table for exams (found in the Unit 1, Unit 2 or Unit 3 folder on D2L) or at this link
    • The units 4 and 5 periodic table for exams (found in the Unit 4 or Unit 5 folder on D2L) or at this link.
    • The list of solubility rules found in the Unit 2 Folder on D2L or at this link

“What should I study?”

Students often ask me what are good things to study to prepare for the final.  That is a difficult question as it depends on how you learn.  A big part of success in college is figuring out what study approaches work for you!  That said, many students have told me that looking over their old exams, the practice quizzes, and the practice exams has been very helpful to them — them going back and studying the items they do not understand-can’t answer.  So if you are unsure that might be a good thing to do.

Also remember to see the Bruce’s notes on this website for each topic to help and that you can always contact me or the Learning Commons tutors for help.  The general Fall 2022 Chemistry Tutoring Schedule is at this link.

Below are links to general information about the testing center and the exams (the same info I posted for earlier exams)

For this exam, you will be provided a copy of the Periodic Table for Units 4-5 You can see the Table in the Unit 5 Folder under content in D2L.

There are resources in the Unit 5 Folder under Content to help you prepare.  Please take a look at them.  One of those resources is a practice exam.  Please read more about the practice exam below:

Practice Exam
What the practice exam is:

This practice exam will be similar in length, number of questions, types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, numerical problems, etc) to your exam.  The practice exam will be useful as a general review and will help you see how prepared you are.  If the practice exam (without looking at your notes) is easy for you, the actual exam probably will be.  If it is difficult, the actual exam probably will be.

What the practice exam is NOT:

The actual exam will NOT be the same as the practice exam with only a few numbers changed.  Do NOT think that if you only study and memorize the questions on the practice exam that you will be ready for the exam because the questions will be the same.

Tutoring Opportunities

LCC Tutoring is offering Exam 5 Prep help sessions free to all CHEM 151 students.  Information about the sessions is shown here and a link given specific dates and times is here. Please let me know if you have questions about these sessions.  The general Fall 2022 Chemistry Tutoring Schedule is at this link.

Please let me know if you have questions as you prepare for the exam – I’d be happy to help!

Final Exam

The final exam will also be a pencil and paper exam in the Testing Center.  The exam will be available Thursday 12/8 – Saturday 12/10 (note no Monday availability).

I will post and send out detailed information about the Final Exam this Friday or Saturday.

I hope your week has gotten off to a good start and Unit 3 is going well.  Here are some updates and reminders for the rest of this week:

Due Thursday 10/20

  • Mastering Chemistry Chapters 6 and 7 is due Thurs 10/20
  • Topic Assignment Chapters 6 and 7 is due Thurs 10/20.  Like the previous Topic Assignments, it is available under assessments then assignments on D2L.  Thanks to you who noticed the error of the original due date in D2L being yesterday (10/17).  The due date is Thursday 10/20 and it is still available on D2L.

Exam 2

I have returned your graded Unit 2 Exam to each of you who completed it.  If you have any questions about any questions or problems you did incorrectly or were unable to do, please follow up with me or the Learning Commons tutors.

On average, the Unit 2 exam is the most difficult for most students in CHEM 151.  If you did well on it, congratulations!  Please continue working hard and doing what you are doing.  If you found it difficult or did poorly, it does not mean you have to give up.  Students often improve in later exams (changing their approach and study methods may help with this – I’d be happy to discuss this with you).

Next week and remaining in Unit 3

  • Mastering Chemistry Chapters 8 and 9 is due Thurs 10/27
  • Topic Assignment Chapters 8 and 9 is available now and  due Thurs 10/27
  • The window for the Unit 3 Exam 3 is Thursday 10/27 through Monday 10/31 window. It will be similar in format and offered in the Testing Centers the same as the Unit 1 and 2 exams.   I will send out additional information with the reminders next week.

Updates and reminders for October 1-10 and rest of Unit 2

Here are some updates and reminders for the rest of Unit 2

  1. The next Topic Assignment, covering Gases (Ch 10) and Thermochemistry (Ch 5) is available on D2L now and due Thursday 10/6. It can be found in D2L by clicking the Assessments tab then Assignments (same location as earlier Topic Assignments).  Some of you did not show your work on earlier Topic Assignments (simply writing the answers to multi-step problems).  Please know that you are required to show sufficient work that you demonstrate your understanding of the problem, and that zero credit will be given for correct answers with no solutions or work shown.
  2. The Mastering Chemistry Chapter 5 Assignment (covering Thermochemistry)  is due Thursday 10/6.
  3. Several of you informed me that the video for Question 5 on the Ch 10 (Gases) Mastering Chemistry site was not working.  Thank you for calling that to my attention.  I have adjusted all of your grades on the Ch 10 Mastering Chemistry assignment by the 0.6 points for that problem, to add credit for that problem onto your score.
  4. The Unit 2 Exam will be offered Thursday 10/6 through Monday 10/10 (not including Sunday).  More detailed information about the exam is below.
  5. Remember, you can see all deadlines on the Course Schedule.
