Unit 3 deadlines today (Tuesday 4/11) and Unit 4 reminders

Reminders for TODAY

First, a quick reminder about the end of Unit 3.  The deadline to take the Unit 3 exam deadline in the Testing Center is today by closing time at the Testing center of your choice.  Please see more info about the Unit 3 exam below.

Also, Quiz 4 (covering Unit 3) was due yesterday – since I didn’t get this reminder sent out earlier I’ll still accept it today – please send it in ASAP if you haven’t.

Unit 4

Unit 4 contains the last two topics of the course – Electrochemistry and Molecular Orbitals.  The schedule for Unit 4 can be found on the Online Course Schedule, with the first unit 4 deadline on April 21.

Unit 3 Exam

Exam Information

Like Units 1 and 2, the exam is a proctored, pen/pencil and paper exam.  It is not offered online on D2L.  It will be available during open Testing Center Days and Hours through today

The exam will cover everything in Unit 3

Testing hours and locations are at this link

There is detailed information about the exams at this link.  Please read it carefully – it contains the answers to many frequently asked questions.  Let me know if you have additional questions after reading it.

For this exam, you will be provided a copy of the Periodic Table for Units 3-4.  A copy of the periodic table you will receive is at this link.

Additional Study Resources

Don’t forget to look at the Unit 3 – additional study resources page on this Website.  It contains many resources to help you prepare for the exam.  Please take a look at them.  One of those resources is a practice exam.  Please read more about the practice exam below:

Practice Exam
What the practice exam is:

This practice exam will be similar in length, number of questions, types of questions (multiple choice, short answer, numerical problems, etc) to your exam.  The practice exam will be useful as a general review and will help you see how prepared you are.  If the practice exam (without looking at your notes) is easy for you, the actual exam probably will be.  If it is difficult, the actual exam probably will be.

What the practice exam is NOT:

The actual exam will NOT be the same as the practice exam with only a few numbers changed.  Do NOT think that if you only study and memorize the questions on the practice exam that you will be ready for the exam because the questions will be the same.

Online CHEM 152 Update March 25 (includes Unit 3 info and schedule update)

I hope all of you have been able to get back into the swing of things with all things LCC after the cyberthreat outage.  If you are having any issues accessing materials, changing passwords, etc please see the info below.  This update contains information regarding deadline extensions and schedule changes as a result of the outage as well as unit 3 exam information.

If you are unable to change your LCC Password to access D2L and LCC email, read this.  This does NOT apply to the online homework.

If you are unable to access D2L or LCC email, or change your LCC Password, please contact the LCC Help Desk at 517-483-5221.

If you are unable to log into the ONLINE HOMEWORK, read this

When you changed your LCC Password after the cyberthreat, it DID NOT change your password for the online homework.  You should still use your same password that you used before the cyberthreat outage (or you can use lost password to reset it – remember the recovery email will go to your LCC email address – not D2L email)

Course Schedule and Deadline changes

All deadline extensions and schedule changes as a result of the cyberthreat outage are posted in the Online Course Schedule.  These deadlines have been extended as follows:

  • All unit 3 deadlines (Oxidation-Reduction Online Homework, Transition Metals and Coordination Chemistry Online Homework, Chemical Thermodynamics Online Homework, Quiz 4, and the Unit 3 Exam) have had the deadlines extended by 7 days.
  • All unit 4 deadlines (Electrochemistry Online Homework, Molecular Orbitals Online Homework, Quiz 5, Quiz 6, and the Unit 4 Exam) have had the deadlines extended by 4 days.
  • Final Exam Part 2 has had the deadlines extended by 4 days.
  • Final Exam Part 1 will be on the original schedule

All assignments will be available on the dates they were originally scheduled.  This will enable you to stay on the original schedule if you were relatively unaffected by the outage or to catch up gradually and still complete the course by the end of the semester if it affected you more substantially.  If these extensions are not sufficient or pose undue hardship, please contact me and we will make other arrangements.

Upcoming Unit 3 Reminders

Let me know if you have questions or need assistance!

Online CHEM 152 Update weekend of March 18-19

LCC sent out information on Twitter last night reporting on the status of courses and closures as a result of the cyberthreat.  If you haven’t already read it, see the link here: Update on Twitter

Key points from the update:

  • If you have any in-person classes, they resume Tuesday March 21.
  • Online courses are paused until further notice (since D2L and LCC email are not operational.  However, if you wish, you can continue some work in this course during the outage.  For what you can do and deadline information, see below:
Reading course material on this website and in the OpenStax website

Everything on this site and the OpenStax text are not affected by the outage, so you can continue study as normal if you wish

Online Homework Assignments

The online homework system is still operable. If you wish, you are free to work on the online homework now.  However, the deadlines for the online homework for all assignments in Unit 3 will be extended to well after online classes at LCC resume.

Quizzes

I will continue to post links to the quizzes on this website according to the original schedule.  If needed, new due dates for all of them will be posted on the course schedule after online classes resume at LCC.  However, if you want to want to work on them during the outage, you are free to do so.  If you do, you will just need to hold on to your completed assignments, as you will not be able to submit them to me until LCC email resumes (unless you happen to be on campus, where you could give me a paper copy).  You can submit them to me by email once email is restored and classes resume.

Exams

New exam windows will be posted on the Online Course Schedule once classes resume

Grades and Grading

Until D2L access is restored, neither you or I will have access to your grades.  Also, I will not be able to grade any ungraded assignments until email is restored.  Hopefully, that will be soon!

I have graded your Unit 3 exams.  I am not permitted to send grade information to a non-LCC address, but I can tell you your grade by phone or in-person (if you are on campus).  Send a text to me at 517-618-1716 if you wish to do that and we can arrange either an in-person meeting or phone call.

Help with course material

If you live in the Lansing area and can come to campus, the Learning Commons will be providing in-person tutoring and I will be available to meet on campus as well (either during office hours MW 12:30 – 1:30 or other times by appointment).  I can be reached by call or text at 517-618-1716 (but not by email) until the outage ends.  If you have any questions, please contact me at that number as well.

Thursday 3/16 update

Most of you have seen the College’s messages that online classes are cancelled at least through the weekend due to a cyberthreat..  The college email servers are down, so you will not be able to email quizzes to me or contact me via email.

If it is helpful to you and best fits your needs, feel free to access info on this website that you can access, but you are under no obligation to do so during the online course cancellation period.  The Online Course Schedule and deadlines will be updated to give you time to complete assignments once online classes resume.

If you have questions or need to contact me, please text 517-618-1716 and include your name and which class you are taking.

I’m sorry about the impact this is having on your studies and hope to be able to fully resume class soon.

Unit 3 comes next.  It covers three topics: Oxidation-Reduction Reactions, Transition Metals and Coordination Chemistry, and Chemical Thermodynamics.   See the Online Course Schedule for assignments and deadlines for Unit 3. As you will see, I’ve put no expectation of work over Spring Break into the suggested pacing for the course, but the resources are there should you wish to begin over this time, since this is an online class and I realize many of you have different schedules, plans, obligations, etc.

Best wishes for a strong finish to Unit 2, a good Spring Break, and let me know if you have questions or need assistance with the class.

Online CHEM 152 – Update and reminders (Including Exam 2 Info)

I hope your study of Chemical Kinetics has gone well and your study of Nuclear Chemistry is progressing.  Please feel free to comment should you have questions.

Some announcements for the remainder of Unit 2 are below – please read everything below carefully and let me know if you have questions.

Quizzes and Online Homework

Quiz 3 is the only quiz for this unit and is due Monday 2/27.   I apologize for the delay in getting Quiz 2 graded – between some family obligations, some unexpected work duties, and minor illness over the last week I have gotten behind, but an open day on the calendar today and feeling better I should make a dent in it — look for them via email.

The online homework for Nuclear Chemistry is also due Monday 2/27.

Unit 1 Exam

Exam Information

Like Unit 1, the exam is a proctored, pen/pencil and paper exam.  It is not offered online on D2L.  It will be available during open Testing Center Days and Hours Tuesday 2/28 and ending Saturday 3/4.

Please note that I departed from the Friday through Tuesday window used last semester (and that we will use for most exams) due to LCC being on Spring Break the week of March 6-10.  If this causes undue hardship for you, please let me know — the Testing Center does offer limited hours over Spring Break.

The exam will cover everything in Unit 2.

Updates for Week of 2/13/23

Hopefully your study of Chemical Kinetics in Unit 2 is going well!  Here are some reminders and updates in the course for the next week.  Please let me know if you have questions or need help with the course material.

Assignments and topics for Unit 2 (see the Course Schedule)

Unit 1 Exams

You should have a copy of your graded Unit 1 Exam in your email inbox (either LCC Student email or D2L email – I emailed them to both).  Please look over the exams, make sure I didn’t make any errors in calculating your exam grade, and contact me with any questions about the grading of the exam or how to answer any of the questions on the exam.

Checking in

I’m sure many of you are still reeling from the tragic events that unfolded at MSU last night. I know that many of you have strong connections to MSU and the area.  I’m grateful that LCC is closed today to allow time for people to process.

I will be sending out some reminders and updates later today for the course, as well as sending back graded work (your unit 1 exams and many of your Quiz 2) today.  I do this only because Tuesdays is a good day for me to get this type of work done (as I teach in-person Mondays and Wednesdays) and I know you all have varied schedules and it will be better for many of you to get this information sooner rather than later.  Please know there are no immediate deadlines and there is no expectation or requirement that you open or read those emails or updates today.

People react differently to violence and fear, and my and the college’s goal is to support you. Please know these resources are available should you need them:

Take care of yourselves.

Please read everything below carefully and let me know if you have questions.

Quizzes

I have completed grading Quiz 1 and returned graded ones to you via email to the address you sent it from.  Please let me know if you have questions.  One possible point of confusion – the quiz was worth 20 points but in previous semesters CHEM 152 quizzes have been worth 25 points – I forgot this when grading.  I do not take away points once awarded so all of you got an extra 5 points  on the quiz if you submitted it.

Quiz 2 is available now at the link and is due Monday, Feb 6.
