Reminders for Week of March 18-25

I hope you had a good Spring Break and Unit 3 is off to a good start for you.  The semester is going quickly (at least to me).  We are over halfway through the course at this point.

Hopefully your study of Oxidation-Reduction in Unit 3 is going well!  Perhaps you have even started on Transition Metals and Coordination Chemistry (if not, you should soon to keep pace with the course).  Here are some reminders and updates in the course for the next week.

Assignments and topics for next week (see the Course Schedule)

Have a good weekend and let me know if you have questions!

Reminders and Updates for end of Unit 2 (including Unit 2 Exam)

Hopefully your study of Chemical Kinetics and Nuclear Chemistry in Unit 2 is going well!  Here are some reminders and updates in the course (including the Unit 2 Exam, which is available beginning tomorrow)

Supplemental Homework Questions Nuclear Chemistry

Supplemental HW questions for Nuclear Chemistry will be due March 5 (note the Saturday, rather than the usual Monday deadline to complete the exam before Spring Break begins.

Unit 2 Exam available tomorrow (March 3) through Sunday (March 6)

The Unit 2 exam will cover the topics of Chemical Kinetics and Nuclear Chemistry

The exam will be available Thursday March 3 at 8 am and must be completed by Sunday Feb 6 at 11:59 pm.  This will leave the whole next week for Spring Break.  You can access it on D2L by clicking  Assessments then Quizzes. (D2L calls anything it grades automatically a “quiz” – including graded homework or exams).

Even though you have a four day window in which to take it (which hopefully will give you some flexibility), it will be timed with a 2 hour limit.  You must complete it in one 2 hour sitting, so arrange to take it when you have 2 hours and will not be interrupted.

There are resources for study and review (including review questions and a practice exam) in addition to the lecture notes and text.   Click here for a list of additional study and review resources for Unit 2.

Unit 3

Next up is Unit 3.  Details for what is covered in Unit 3 can be found at the Unit 3 link just above or through Unit 3 on the menu at this website. Unit 3 starts officially On March 14 (after Spring Break) and there is no expectation you will work on it over spring break.  However, if you wish to get started early, it is available now.

Deadlines, as always, are on the Course Schedule.

Let me know if you have questions and (after completing the homework and exam) have a great Spring Break!

Reminders and Updates for week of Jan 24-30

Here are some reminders and updates in the course for the end of week 2 and the beginning of week 3 (Jan 24-30)

Error on Acid Base Review Supplemental Homework question

On the supplemental homework exercise you completed recently, there was an error in Question 5.  The correct answer for the pH of a 0.0100 M KOH solution is 12.00.  You did receive credit for this answer on any of your attempts.

Assignments and topics for next week (see the Course Schedule)

  • The 2nd supplemental homework assignment (Common ion and Buffer) is due Monday 1/24.
  • Quiz 1 – Acid-Base Review, Common Ion and Buffer due Sunday 1/24.  This quiz is NOT on D2L – it is available under Unit 1 in the menu of this course website.  Or at this link.  Follow the directions and submit it by 11:59 pm Monday 1/24.
  • Begin the next topic – Acid-Base titrations.  Supplemental HW questions for this topic will be available by Tuesday 1/25 and due Monday 1/31.
Why are the supplemental homework questions located under “Quizzes” in D2L but Quiz 1 (and your other quizzes this semester) is not?

This is a good question and one that sometimes causes confusion.  The reason is this — In D2L, quizzes are graded assignments that are automatically graded within D2L and in which you must input your answers into D2L.  This describes the supplemental homework assignments.  It also describes your Unit Exams and Final Exam, which is why they will also be under Quizzes in D2L.

But quiz 1 was not posted in D2L, mainly because I wanted you to have a pencil and paper quiz that I could grade for partial credit and write comments on, rather than having D2L grade.  The quiz was posted under Unit 1 in the menu of this course website.  All remaining quizzes this semester will be posted in their appropriate units in the same way.

I hope you have a good weekend, and feel free to reach out with any questions.

End of Week 1 Reminders

Congratulations on making it through your first week in CHEM 152! It’s never easy to learn to navigate all the details of a new online course and you are all doing great!

Here are some reminders for the next few days (from the Course Schedule)

  1. The supplemental (graded) online homework for the acid-base review on D2L is due Monday, 1/17 at 11:59 pm.  If you are not sure where to find it or how it works, read below.
  2. After you finish the graded homework, and conclude your review of acids and bases, your next step would be to continue following the course schedule and begin the topic of Common Ion Effect and Buffers.

You will encounter three types of online questions and problems as you work through the class:

  1. The auto check questions built into the Bruce’s Notes lecture notes.  Those are ungraded and are there for you to work as you go through the lecture material.
  2. A similar set of ungraded homework problems for each topic.  They are located in the link CHEM 152 Online Homework under the “Useful links” area at the right side of all pages in this course website.  Working these will help prepare you for the graded supplemental homework problems (many of the supplemental homework problems are based on these problems)
  3. The supplemental homework (graded) problems, which are housed on D2L. The supplemental homework questions can be accessed on D2L by clicking the “assessments” tab in the top menu then clicking “quizzes”.

This link on the homework web page provides a description about the website (regular ungraded) homework, the supplemental homework (graded and with due dates) on D2L, and how they work together.  It also has detailed instructions about how to find the supplemental homework on D2L.   Please read it, and it you still are unclear about the homework assignments or what is submitted please ask.

Have a good weekend and feel free to reach out with questions or if you have difficulties.

Welcome to CHEM 152 Spring 2022 Semester!

Welcome to the second semester of general chemistry, CHEM 152. My name is Bruce Farris. I am your instructor for the course and I look forward to working with you this semester!

This is the course website on LCC’s Open learning Lab. It will be the main place where you work on the course this semester.  There is also a course D2L site which you will use to take exams, complete some other graded assignments, and check your grades.  It will be available beginning Monday, Jan 10 at 8am.  Here are links and information to hopefully answer questions about the course and instructions for how to get started:

As you familiarize yourself with the course (both the Open Learning Lab course website and D2L), please contact me with any questions.

If you need technical help with D2L, please contact the LCC Help Desk at (517) 483-5221 or visit the Help Desk website. To learn more about navigating D2L and the tools within D2L, please visit the eLearning Student Resource Site.

Finally, I’d appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes by Wednesday, Jan 12 to complete this short survey: link to survey That will let me know that you have read this welcome message and wish to complete the course this semester! If there is anything in the survey you prefer not to answer, just leave it blank.

If you have any questions about the course, feel free to contact me. I hope you enjoy this class and encourage you to contact me frequently  by phone, text, or by email.

Again, I look forward to working with you this semester!
